America's Favorite Pastime

We recently had the privilege of attending two Cardinals baseball games. Caleb got free tickets at work so we took advantage of the opportunity to see the sport St Louis is so crazy about.
We drove into downtown and I got a glimpse of the brand new Cardinals stadium. Impressive. “Where did they get all that money?”, I thought. Then Caleb pointed out to me that it was called “Busch stadium”. Ah ha. And at $8.00 a cup they are still making it big. Good thing we don’t drink. Although I did notice that consuming alcohol was a popular way to get through, I mean, increase one’s enjoyment of a baseball game.
The first game we attended there were only three points scored after seven innings. I was more interested in looking at the St Louis skyline than what little was happening on the field.
“Isn’t this sport just a little bit boring?”, I asked my husband. He explained, “That is why they call it America’s favorite pastime, not America’s favorite sport.” And a pastime it is. Everybody was dressed up in red, filling the stands and… eating.
Speaking of eating, I decided I would go to the second game if I could eat something to help pass the time. You know, a chili dog, nachos or something like that. As we looked for our seats, I scanned the many food stands for some good snacks. Hmm, nachos with cheese was over $8.00! Nachos… with cheese… for eight dollars! I kept thinking, “What would Money Saving Mom think about that?” I would have to clip a lot of coupons to make up for a few eight dollar chips. Not that I even clip coupons, but if I did there would be a lot. Next I passed an ice cream stand. You know how much I like ice cream, so I got in line. Then I realized it was going to cost me $4.00 for a cup of ice cream the size of my thumbnail. I couldn’t justify that either. I finally settled on a cup of lemonade and found my seat.
During the second game, it started pouring rain in the third inning, so we left early.

Overall, I would have to say professional baseball is a ridiculous exploitation of America’s pocketbook.
But they love it.
And I had a good time.
And I might even do it again!

You are lucky to get to go enjoy the Cardinals. We have left the land of real baseball. One year for our annivesary I took Rob to a Cardinals/Cubs game. He wore blue and I wore red. A little boy near us said, "Hey mom look it's another mixed couple." Yes, fond memories. My favorie part was sitting with my husband for three whole hours.

That's what I was thinking Shawna.

Baseball is not my favorite sport, but I think I could get into it if we lived near a "real" team. I love to observe all the patriotism and loyalty caught up in a sport like that.

This was stinkin' hilarious to read!

I agree, but I love to go to games anyway. :)

Half the fun of going to the game is that you can carry on a conversation and watch the game at the same time.

It's a lot of fun to go as couples cause then the boys can watch and the girls can talk.

Well, all of those reasons are why Terry and I do the triple A teams - things are MUCH cheaper there. Bryson looks SO cute in his "cardinal" gear!
At least it's RED.

We do love our Cardinals around here. In fact, I gave birth at 5 in the morning and my hubbie was at a World Series game that night. We call Asher our World Series baby. However we have also learned to pack lots of snacks and bottles of water....concession plus parking could kill ya. :-) Love his outfit.
